In-laws and colleagues 'not welcome'

THE in-laws top the list of the most unwelcome house guests, according to a new survey.

Homeowners are also likely to give friends with young children and work colleagues a frosty reception, the poll from hotel company Travelodge revealed.

The findings also showed that 45% of homeowners said the main reason for buying an over-sized property was to accommodate visiting friends and family.

But nearly 20% had never had relatives or friends to stay overnight.

On average householders have friends to stay just six times a year and relatives only five times.

Nearly half (46%) said playing host was an unwelcome chore, with householders from Southampton the least keen to put people up and Swansea residents the most happy to do so.

Around 8% of homeowners had never used their spare bedroom to put someone up, with 58% using their spare room simply to house junk. Other uses include a study, a TV room, an exercise room or a space for wardrobes.

Travelodge's chief operating officer Guy Parsons said: "Buying a house that's too big simply to accommodate visitors just doesn't add up, particularly when many people don't even enjoy hosting guests overnight.

"Brits' inclination toward maintaining unused spare rooms is a tremendous financial drain. If you don't have regular overnight visitors, buying a house with fewer bedrooms can make a lot of sense. Your mortgage is lighter and you can put visiting friends or family up in a hotel - everybody stays happy in the process."
