UK travellers give thanks

BRITONS bent on a Bank Holiday break are taking advantage of an American one.

The Thanksgiving Day holiday in America this week has led to a surge of bookings to US cities, the Travelocity.co.uk company said.

Sales have surged by almost 50% compared to last year, with New York, Las Vegas, Boston, Miami and Washington DC among the top-selling destinations for British travellers.

Las Vegas bookings are up 300% and Washington DC is up 190%, with Philadelphia rising 32% and Miami increasing 30%.

Travelocity.co.uk managing director Ned Booth said: "In the UK there are no national holidays between August Bank Holiday and Christmas so Thanksgiving is a perfect reason to take a mini-break pre-Christmas - and to get started on Christmas shopping too."

But he warned that with Thanksgiving being the busiest travel period for Americans, airports were likely to be congested.

It is predicted that more than two million passengers will travel in the USA each day between November 17 and 28 as people tag on days either side to extend the November 23 holiday celebration.
