'Feuds drive partners to marry abroad'

FINANCE and family feuds are driving more people to get married abroad, according to a new survey.

many as 57% of people would consider tying the knot overseas, a survey from First Choice Travel Shops and Holiday Hypermarkets found.

The biggest reason for travelling far afield for the ceremony was to avoid family feuds, the poll disclosed.

And those questioned who had married abroad paid just £520 on average, compared with the average cost of a UK wedding of around £11,000.

The survey of 2,571 people also showed:

80% reckoned a traditional white wedding was more stressful to organise than nuptials in the Caribbean;

88% thought couples got caught up in holding a lavish reception and forgot why they were getting married;

Only two in three said the ceremony and vows were the most important part of the wedding day;

The ideal number of guests was 36;

The Irish were the most keen to marry abroad, followed by Londoners and those from the Midlands;

:Greece was the most popular destination to marry in, while Barbados topped the list for those thinking about getting hitched overseas.

First Choice Retail managing director Cheryl Powell said: "With the stress and money involved in planning a wedding nowadays, it's not really surprising that people are jetting off for a much smaller, more intimate affair under blue skies."
