Spy hotel vosted most luxuriousA HOTEL involved in the investigation into the Alexander Litvinenko poisoning case has been voted one of the most luxurious in the world. The Parkes Hotel in Knightsbridge, west London, was placed 11th in the best luxury hotels in a contest based on travellers' responses on the TripAdvisor website. Traces of the potentially deadly substance polonium were found at The Parkes following the death of former KGB colonel Litvinenko last year. One guest who stayed at the hotel last month told the TripAdvisor site that he had encountered "outstanding staff" and had had "a great room". The Parkes was one of 20 British hotels among the the 345 hotels worldwide honoured in the awards, with nine British establishments appearing in the list for the 100 best luxury hotels in the world.
Splendid The top-placed British hotel in this category was the 50-room, four-star seaside Atlantic hotel in St Brelade, Jersey, which was described by TripAdvisor travellers as "truly splendid, a little gem, fabulous, sublime perfection and the best small hotel in Europe". Scottish establishments dominated the best inns and B&Bs Europe category with the Trafford Bank, Inverness and three Edinburgh businesses - Elmview, Geraldsplace and Blacket Garden Flat - all featuring in the top 10. Other British top 10 successes in categories covering Europe included The Best Western Big Blue Hotel, Blackpool, which was best for families; Hotel 41, London, which was best for romance; Milestone Hotel, London, which was best for service; and Chestnuts House, Bath, and the Bay Tree House, London - both for best inns and B&Bs. The Clevedon Hotel, Torquay, received a double top 10 for European best bargain and European best hidden gem. TripAdvisor also listed what it considered to be the 10 dirtiest hotels in Britain, with four of them belonging to the Britannia hotel chain. The Britannia Hotel in Stockport, Greater Manchester, was rated the dirtiest of them all. One guest who stayed last month wrote that his room was "absolutely disgusting, damp and smelly with paper hanging off the walls (and) plaster falling away". Another guest said of the hotel: "For the love of God, stay away." A spokeswoman for Britannia Hotels said today: "We are not making any comment." These were the top 10 dirtiest hotels in the UK according to TripAdvisor:
