Australia
Brisbane: An average of 29C (84F) during the Aussie summer. Sydney and Melbourne: Warm to hot summers. Temperatures in January should hover around 27C (80F) in Sydney. Perth and Adelaide enjoy hot, dry summers and temperatures can rise to a sizzling 43C (110F). Balearic Islands (Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza)
Worth remembering that winter temperatures here are significantly lower than the Canaries - Menorca had a rare fall of snow last year - with the daytime average maximum around 15C (59F), though they boast around 22 dry days each month. Temperatures pick up dramatically by May. Canada
Winter equates to snow, snow and more snow with maximum falls in February. Great for flying to Calgary and skiing in The Rockies. Vancouver: average daytime 7C (45F) ranging to -1C (30F) in Toronto. Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerte-ventura)
Average maximum temperatures of 21C (70F) for Tenerife in the winter months make this island a popular spot for sunseekers. With around 21 rain-free days each month, there's a reasonable chance of staying dry and getting a tan. Caribbean and West Indies
Warm, sunny winters, with average temperatures around 29C (84F) for locations including Barbados and Grenada, though in Jamaica that can rise to 31C (88F). Pack a fold-away shower-proof to cope with sharp, thundery showers in the late afternoon or evening. Dominican Republic
Best time to visit is between December and April. The hurricane season runs from July to September. Dubai
Expect average temperatures of around 24C (76F) in February, rising to the low 80s by March, with less rain than the Caribbean. Egypt
Cairo has a fairly constant temperature throughout the winter months, averaging 20C (68F), with between four and five hours of sunshine a day. Sharm El Sheikh averages 16C (62F) in January and February. France
Temperatures can fall as low as 6C (43F) in Paris in January. Might be better to wait until spring for that romantic short break. In Nice, average daily maximum winter temperatures are 13C (56F). In November they can hold up to 17C (62F). Greece and the Greek Islands
Temperatures on the Greek mainland average 16C (61F) in December. On the island of Crete between January and March they can be between 10C (50F) and 20C (68F). Hong Kong
Winter is a good time to visit as the monsoon and typhoon seasons have ended. October to March is generally warm and dry. Expect average temperatures to be around 17C - 18C (63F - 65F) in February, which is mainly dry but can be rather cloudy. India
Delhi: from December to February, days are generally sunny and dry with temperatures in the low to mid 70sF, although early mornings and evenings can be cold. Further south, in the island holiday spot of Goa, you can count on a 20F degree difference, with long, rain-free days in January and February, when temperatures hit 32C (90F). Italy
Average daytime maximum temperatures range from 7C(45F) in Venice during December to 13C (56F) in Rome and Naples. By March, temperatures may have risen to around 15C (59F). The two Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily are not warm enough for serious sunbathing in the winter, with temperatures hovering around the upper 50sF and low 60sF. Dry days average 23 each month. By May expect temperatures of up to 23C (74F). Israel
Southern Israel enjoys average daily maximum temperatures of around 22C (72F) and the popular resort of Eilat has around seven hours of sun per day. Kenya
Big difference here between temperatures at Mombassa and Malindi on the Indian Ocean coast, where 33C (92F) is the average from December to March and those in Nairobi, which are 24C (76F) to 27C (80F) in the same period. Malta
Average daily winter maximum between 15C and 16C (59F- 61F). There about nine rain-free days a month. Malaysia
A humid climate with little variety in daytime temperatures which average around 33C (91F). It's slightly hotter in Kuala Lumpur and Penang than in Borneo. Mexico
Most of Mexico has sunny weather for a large part of the year. The hottest and rainiest period of the year is from May to October. In the popular destination of Cancun in December temperatures hover around 31C (87F), while during the corresponding period in Mexico City it will only be about 21C (70F) North Africa
In winter, Marrakech in Morocco is a favourite with travellers. Temperatures average 19C (66F), with around 24 dry days a month. In Tunisia, January and February temperatures are around 60F, rising to 21C (70F) in March. Portugal
Daytime maximum in winter of around 16C (61F). But rainfall is heavier than the Spanish mainland, with only around 14 dry days on average. South Africa
Cape Town enjoys a Mediterranean style climate, with warm to hot sunny months during our winter and temperatures around 27C (80F). The same applies to Durban, the Garden Route and Johannesburg, though temperatures will vary slightly. Top tip: if heading out to Kruger on safari, take a waterproof bag for your precious cameras when using open Jeeps. Rain storms are sudden and heavy. Seychelles
A tropical climate with average daily maximum temps during our winter of 27C - 28C (81F - 83F). Rarely affected by tropical cyclones. Singapore
Hot, wet and distinctly humid. Worst months, March and September, when the winds are light. Jan to Feb tempe- ratures are 30C (86F) to 31C (88F). Spain
Southern Spain has a warm, dry winter with average maximum temperatures of around 17C (62F) along the coast. Around 24 days each month should be rain free during our winter months. Thailand
November to April is the dry period, with rain falling on only a few days each month. In January Bangkok and Penang are hottest at 32C (90F) with most other centres only a few degrees behind. Turkey
Winter in Turkey is not very warm. Average temperatures only reach about 10C (50F) and it is wet too, with only 12 or 13 dry days per month. USA
As it is such a huge country, all types of weather can be found on the landmass. California: cold enough for snow and winter-sports in the mountains. Average temperature on coast 19C (66F) - though this will vary between San Francisco in the north and San Diego in the south - relatively dry and sunny. Florida: December to February, dry and sunny, afternoon temperatures around 22C (71F) to 25C (77F). But take warm jackets - there can be bright but cool spells and even drizzle. The nights can be cool. New York: as wintry as Britain, and can be much colder!
